SUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEMS

  • Leximancer Desktop 4.5

  • Windows 7, 8 10 (64 bit)

  • Mac Intel OS X 10.11+ (El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra) 64 bit

Operating systems must be fully up to date with the latest service packs and security patches.

Leximancer may work with earlier versions of operating systems but are not supported.

DOES LEXIMANCER REQUIRE JAVA TO BE INSTALLED?

As of V4.5, Leximancer no longer requires Java to be installed separately. The Leximancer V4.5 installer installs everything necessary to run Leximancer.

REQUIRED SYSTEM MEMORY

A minimum system should have 4GB of ram, with at least 1.5GB dedicated to Leximancer. Please note that the amount of memory required by Leximancer is dependent on the amount of text being analyzed and project settings. Use of other software may limit the amount of memory available to Leximancer.

Note: For Windows: In some cases, Leximancer may not be able to access enough memory to run even if the computer has enough memory. In this case, after rebooting, open Leximancer first, before any other applications such as Word or Excel.

REQUIRED DISK SPACE

It is recommended to have at least 20GB free disk space for source text documents and Leximancer project data-store files. More disk space may be required dependent on the number of documents analyzed and project settings used.

SUPPORTED WEB BROWSERS

Leximancer V4.5:

  • IE 11, IE Edge, Firefox 45+, Chrome 50+, and Safari 10+

Earlier browser versions may work but are not supported

Leximancer V4.0:

The Leximancer 4 user interface is displayed in a browser.
Leximancer requires visualization and rendering capabilities that
not all legacy browsers support adequately. Leximancer has strived to provide legacy browser users with as much functionality as possible. For some legacy browsers, not all features will be available and performance may be degraded, particularly for the map visualizations.

It is strongly recommended to use the latest fully patched browser versions available:

  • Firefox

  • Chrome

  • Safari

  • Internet Explorer 9+ Internet Explorer 11 is NOT supported in V4.0. Leximancer 4 does not use Java browser applets.

Some Internet Explorer versions may experience some feature limitations
and performance degredation. Other browsers may work with Leximancer Version 4 but are unsupported.

PROBLEMS WITH INTERNET EXPLORER 9 AND LEXIMANCER V4.0

Some users have experienced difficulties using Leximancer Desktop and the Leximancer Portal after their systems were upgraded to use IE9. If you are having trouble opening projects or folders in IE9:

  • Select the 'Tools' menu in your browser and then 'Compatibility View Settings'.

Note: You may need to press the 'Alt' key to make the 'Tools' menu appear at the top of the browser window. A 'Compatibility View Settings' dialogue box will open. Click 'Add' to add the Leximancer site to the compatibility view list. For Leximancer Desktop, the website will be localhost For Leximancer Portal, the website will be leximancer.com * You should be able to use Leximancer after closing the dialogue box.

I’VE DOWNLOADED THE LEXIMANCER 4.0 INSTALLER. THE FILENAME IS SOMETHING LIKE LEXIMANCER-AAA-BBB-CCC.JAR. HOW DO I RUN THE INSTALLER?

Note: This question refers only to Leximancer V4.0.

The Leximancer installer should have a filename that ends in ‘.jar’,
Leximancer-Desktop-VYYY-ZZZ.jar for example. If you have Java correctly configured on your system, the installer may be run by double-clicking on the installation jar file. Alternatively, the installer may be run from a command prompt, which is cmd on Windows and Terminal on OS X, by typing:

java -jar Leximancer-Desktop-VYYY-ZZZ.jar

HOW DO I TRANSFER LEXIMANCER AND MY PROJECTS TO A NEW COMPUTER?

Note: If you will be using Leximancer V4.0 on the new computer, be sure to check that the new machine has a Java version that is reasonably current. See Java versions. If your new computer will be using Leximancer V4.5 this is not necessary as V4.5 does not require a separate Java installation.

The recommended upgrade procedure is listed below, this procedure will provide you with:

  • A backup of the current Leximancer installation on external media. This should be kept if needed, or at least until a backup of the new machine has been made.

  • A new Leximancer installation on the new machine that has a copy of your original Leximancer projects.

  • Note: In order for the new Leximancer installation directory to access the original source text documents for your projects you will have to move them to exactly the same locations on your new machine if you wish to re-run or modify the projects. If they are not in the same location and you make any changes to the project settings , you will have to re-select the text document locations and run the project from the start again. If you do not change the project, you can view the results without the original text documents being present.

Backup procedure before transfer:

  1. First backup your current Leximancer installation:

  • Shutdown Leximancer Desktop

  • Make a complete backup of your Leximancer Desktop installation directory. (For example On MacOS this should be the /Applications/Leximancer-Desktop-V4 folder.)

  • Note: If you currently use backup software that backs up the disk Leximancer is installed on, such as time machine on Mac OS X, you may skip the next backup step.

  • Using the backup software of your choice, backup the Leximancer Desktop entire installation folder to external media (USB stick or drive). The Leximancer datastore and projects are in this folder. This will not back up your source text documents, as they may be anywhere on your hard drive. You must back those up separately. Make sure this backup has completed successfully and is valid.

Backup Drive File System: The drive you are backing up to must have a modern file system on it such as NTFS (Windows) or Mac OS Extended (MacOS). Some USB drives come pre-formatted with ancient file systems like FAT which will not allow a correct copy of Leximancer to be made.

Warning for Windows Users: Your backup software must be able to handle long path names. Robocopy is one copy program that correctly handles long path names. The standard Windows copy program and the File Explorer copy WILL NOT always properly copy long file paths.

MacOS users may use the Finder copy commands to copy the Leximancer directory to a USB drive.

Transferring to a new machine

  1. Copy the ‘Leximaancer-V4-Desktop' USB backup directory you made to a folder on the new machine (eg: called ‘Leximancer-V4-Desktop’). Make sure there is adequate disk space before copying.

    • On MacOS, you will want to copy the Leximancer-V4-Desktop folder on the USB drive to the /Applications folder on your new machine.

  2. Warning for Windows Users: Your copy program must support long path names, robocopy from Microsoft can handle long paths. The standard windows copy program and the drag-and-drop copy using the File Explorer will often FAIL to properly copy long file names**

  3. Leximancer Installation on new machine:

    • If you are runnnig the same version of Leximancer on your new machine: Run the original Leximancer V4 Installer on the new machine, selecting the (eg: Leximancer-V4-Desktop) directory on the new machine you copied the original Leximancer to as the target folder. The installer may ask you if you wish to install to an existing directory, this is ok.

    • If you are running a newer version of Leximancer on the new machine, (upgrading from V4 to V4.5 for example) run the new installer. All of your old projects will be preserved.

  4. Start Leximancer on your new machine. Your existing licence will continue to work with the transferred version.

LexiDesktop v5.0 Transfer

You will need to copy the Leximancer data and configuration directory from the old machine to the new.

  1. Click on "My Account" in LexiDesktop 5, and it shows you which directory this is.

  2. This directory should be copied to the new machine, before the Leximancer 5 installer is run.
