HOW DO I SELECT DOCUMENTS TO ADD TO A PROJECT?

The Load Data dialogue box for a project control tab will present a folder tree of available documents and folders (directories) on the left-hand side. Right-clicking on an item will bring up a context-sensitive menu of allowed operations. These operations include:

  1. Refresh: re-read to show any updates

  2. New Folder: Create a new folder to hold documents

  3. Rename: Rename the file or folder

  4. Upload: Upload a single document or a zip of multiple files (See next question).

  5. Delete: Delete the selected file or folder

  6. Add to Document Set: The selected file or folder will appear in the Selected Data list on the right-hand side.

In the data-folder selection panel, you may drag-and-drop files and folders from the available to the selected panel.

FOR LEXIPORTAL, HOW DO I UPLOAD MORE THAN ONE FILE AT A TIME?

Put your data files into a folder (directory) on your computer's hard drive, and create a zip file from the folder. In the Leximancer Portal, open or start a project, go to the first processing stage - Loading Data - and in the data tree, right click on the desired target folder and select upload. The Leximancer server will unpack the files into your data area. Once uploaded you may select any or all of the documents uploaded for use in projects.

On a Mac computer, create a zip by selecting the files in Finder, and right click on the selected files to see the Compress command.

On Windows, go to Windows Explorer and right click to select Create compressed file. Please be aware that some versions of the zip tool on Windows create zip files that are non standard and will not upload correctly. If this happens, try installing and using the free 7Zip package to create the zip files.

To upload files you must have a reasonably fast and reliable internet connection.

IF YOU DELETE A FILE FROM A LEXIPORTAL PROJECT, HOW DO YOU RELOAD IT?

Just upload the file again from your local computer into the LexiPortal data area. Then drag it across into the data selection table for the project. When you re-run the project, this file will be included in the analysis.

HOW DO I LOAD MY FILES INTO LEXIMANCER DESKTOP?

On the project control screen press the Edit button in the Load Data stage. You will see your local drives listed in the Available Documents panel on the left. Expand the drive directories to see the files and folders within them. Drag and drop the desired documents or folders into the Document Set area on the right to link them to the project, then click OK.

WHERE SHOULD I KEEP DATA I USE WITH LEXIMANCER?

For many users, the best advice is to create a folder on your desktop or home directory called LeximancerData and then store the data within that folder, using whatever organization of files and folders makes sense for your projects.

I GET AN ERROR UPLOADING DATA. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

In this case, the data upload to Leximancer has failed. This can be caused by the use of encrypted zip files, or zip files that have character encoding problems, most likely in the file names themselves. The particular zip file you were using appears to have an incorrect character encoding in at least on of the file names or content contained within. The zip file format is not the most robust in dealing with wide varieties of file name characters. If you have zipped the folder using something built-in to Windows or WinZip, you might try zipping the file with 7zip instead. 7zip has tended to give better results. Alternatively, you could get whatever is generating these file names to use a more limited set of characters in the file names. Web crawlers can generate filenames that do not zip well.

For file uploading to complete successfully, you must have a reasonably reliable and fast internet connection.

IS THERE A WAY TO MOVE LEXIMANCER PROJECTS INTO FOLDERS?

Unfortunately, there is no mechanism to move Leximancer projects after they have been created. Project settings can be downloaded from the original project and then uploaded to a new one, initializing the settings to the same values; this is available via the ‘Export Settings’ and ‘Import Settings’ buttons when right clicking on a project in the projects list on the left. Similarly, any modifications to Concept Seeds can be applied to new projects via the ‘Download’ and ‘Upload’ buttons in the Edit Concept Seeds dialog.

HOW TO I USE SPREADSHEET DATA WITH LEXIMANCER?

Leximancer accepts spreadsheet data in the form of CSV or TSV files that have a header row labelling the columns. You cannot use excel spreadsheet files directly, they must be exported to CSV / TSV first.

HOW DO I EXCLUDE SECTIONS OF DOCUMENTS THAT ARE NOT RELEVANT?

The rigorous but labour intensive way is to extract the text as plain text files using a third-party tool. Then either write a program or script to parse the content sections - this is fairly easy if the format is uniform throughout, or edit by hand.

If that is not possible, it is usually possible to filter out boilerplate sections of text data within Leximancer using the Kill concepts feature. Create or select concepts or tags which are unique markers for the content you want to filter out (the concept map will usually show you these as outliers), and put them in the Kill Concepts list to filter those sections out of the analysis.
